iPhone 11

I remember getting my first iPhone in 2009, the iPhone 3GS. Since then I have always had an iPhone (3GS, 4, 4S, 5, [NO 5S], 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus). This month I made the jump from a 7 Plus to a new iPhone 11.

I was never to intrigued with the 8 Plus, I felt it was pretty similar to the 7 Plus I already had. Still now, in January 2020, the iPhone 7/ Plus are one of the greatest releases by Apple. The phones are well built and are very durable (remember the bendy iPhones?) and equally stand the test of time. BUT, I needed a new phone for a few reasons. Firstly, iPhones are a lot more expensive than they use to be, which means for many including myself, a yearly upgrade may not be so feasible. However, most modern iPhones are produced to last, as the iPhone 7 has shown. Secondly, tying in with the previous point, I do plan to keep this iPhone 11 for at least 2 years at the very least.

I am very new to what I call the #notchgang. At first, I hated the idea of the notch, it ruined the screen, in the way like an object between you and the TV, but it grew on me. So you are probably asking why I am so late to joining this clique? Well the iPhone 7 performance was excellent, it was fast, had a big screen, good storage (I had the 128gb) and generally didn’t damage or break, so why replace what doesn’t need replacing? I think I only really started having issues with the release of iOS 13; bugs and lag. When iOS 13 came out, I had noticed that my 7 Plus would not notify me if I received iMessages (this went on about a month), nor would it play a sound or vibrate when being called (the screen would show the usual stuff such as person or number, but no sound or vibration). Another few issues I picked up on were freezing apps (safari would just freeze midway typing something in the search bar) and Whatsapp would not let you click on info or photos of contacts. Another contact related issue was the Phone function app would not let me access the keypad, logs, voicemail, contacts or favourites.

Eventually with software updates, most of these issues were fixed, however the no sound or vibration when calls came through continued as well as lagging in some apps. Although I could have continued with using my 7 Plus (it is in absolute mint condition), I decided that I would eventually need to get a new phone and that now was a good time. I have been due an upgrade on my phone contract for a few years, however I did buy my iPhone 7 Plus with cash from the Apple Store, so I have still held on to it as a backup or spare phone.

I went to my network provider (I am on O2) and discussed and looked through the options with them and decided I would go for the iPhone 11 (128gb). I really wanted it in the green or yellow colour but I kind of reevaluated that idea and thought I may grow out of it in a few months, so I played it safe and went for the black colour. I could have gotten the 11 Pro or even 11 Pro Max, however the telephoto lens did not appeal to me, nor was it a function I needed as I have a DSLR. Another factor is price, the 11 is much much cheaper than the other two models but just as a great a phone. It looks and feels amazing and does most of the same stuff, plus its an upgrade from a 7 Plus so that in itself is an advantage for me.

I know some will say that the iPhone 11 pro has a better OLED screen with a slightly better battery compared to the 11, but I don’t really care too much about that. So long as it looks and feels great, has a screen I think looks good and sounds amazing, I am a happy bunny!

The only downside for me is that the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max come with an 18w USB-C fast charger as standard, whereas the iPhone 11 comes with the normal standard 5w charger. Apple do sell a fast charger for £29 (cable sold separately for £19) here in the UK, so I may look into getting that (you don’t want to always use a fast charger as it may decrease the capability of your battery). The iPhone 11 does support wireless and fast charging and is also 5G enabled (5G not fully available yet).

Apart from that, I am very happy with my new iPhone 11 and cannot wait to explore it further as well as take some pics on its excellent camera that has night mode too (I will take some shots and post them, maybe comparing them to the same picture taken on my 7 Plus).

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this very brief review. Feel free to comment (or email via contact tab above) with any feedback, suggestions, comments or complaints. All the best and see you soon.
